Travis County District Attorney’s Office Provides Updates on Cases
TRAVIS COUNTY – On Friday, February 3, 2023, a Travis County jury convicted Marcus Anthony Gibbs, 35, of Murder.
For Mr. Gibbs’s trial, jury selection started on Monday, January 23, 2023, and testimony began on Tuesday, January 24, 2023. On Friday, February 3, 2023, the jury deliberated and found Mr. Gibbs guilty of Murder.
On July 24, 2019, the Austin Police Department arrested Mr. Gibbs and charged him with the murder of Alexander Antonio Morgan, 22, which took place on July 18, 2019.
On October 9, 2019, Mr. Gibbs was indicted for the offense of Murder.
In a separate trial, on Monday, January 23, 2023, Evan Zanders, 46, pled guilty to Murder.
On February 4, 2020, the Austin Police Department arrested and charged Mr. Zanders for the murder of Guillermo Bernal Gomez, 32, which took place on June 23, 2019. Mr. Zanders was indicted on March 23, 2020, with the offense of Murder.
“Our office is committed to holding people who commit acts of violence accountable,” said Travis County District Attorney José Garza. “We hope these convictions bring closure and peace to the victims’ families.”
In a separate case, on Thursday, January 26, 2023, a Travis County jury acquitted Dontell Mitchell, 30, of Burglary of a Habitation w/ Intent to Commit Sexual Assault.
For Mr. Mitchell’s trial, jury selection started on Monday, January 23, 2023, and testimony began on Tuesday, January 24, 2023. On Thursday, January 26, 2023, the jury deliberated and found Mr. Mitchell not guilty of Burglary of a Habitation w/ Intent to Commit Sexual Assault.
On October 8, 2019, the Austin Police Department arrested Mr. Mitchell and charged him with Habitation w/ Intent to Commit Sexual Assault for the offense that took place on September 16, 2019.
On November 12, 2019, Mr. Mitchell was indicted for the offense of Burglary of a Habitation w/ Intent to Commit Sexual Assault.
