Do I need an attorney to represent my interests?

You do not need an attorney as the victim of a crime in order to participate in the criminal justice system. In a criminal trial, the prosecutor represents the State of Texas and the crime victim is not considered a party to the case.  The prosecutor is not a victim’s attorney, but the prosecutor does have the right to enforce the rights that are afforded to crime victims under state law.
