Travis County District Attorney’s Office Announces Indictment Against Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Tye
Travis County, TX — On Thursday, January 22, 2026, a Special Grand Jury in the 167th Judicial District Court returned an indictment charging Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Jason Tye with the offense of Aggravated Assault by a Public Servant with a Deadly Weapon in connection with the shooting of Elijah Barrientos on July 10, 2023.
The Office’s Civil Rights Unit will prosecute Trooper Tye’s case, which is pending in the 167th District Court for Travis County.
“The Travis County District Attorney’s Office takes the work of presenting all facts and evidence to a grand jury very seriously,” said Travis County District Attorney José Garza. “In this case, an independent group of members of the Travis County community heard the evidence and law and decided that Trooper Tye’s conduct was unlawful.”
