Travis County District Attorney’s Office Announces Indictments Against Markell Turner in Case Related to Islam Mossaad
Travis County, TX — On December 22, 2025, a Travis County grand jury in the 147th Judicial District Court returned a two-count felony indictment charging Markell Turner, 34, with the offenses of Manslaughter and Theft from Person. The charges relate to Turner unlawfully acquiring a juvenile’s phone, belt, and watch, and then recklessly causing Islam Mossaad’s death by colliding a motor vehicle into him on July 27, 2025.
On July 27, 2025, Austin Police Department officers arrested Turner and charged him with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI).
Turner’s case will be prosecuted in the 167th District Court for Travis County.
“Our hearts continue to break for the family of Mr. Mossaad,” said Travis County District Attorney José. “In this case, a group of independent Travis County community members heard the evidence and the law and decided that Turner’s conduct was unlawful.”
“We know that the entire Travis County community was deeply affected by this case, as Mr. Mossaad was a significant figure of faith and service in Central Texas,” Garza continued. “The Travis County District Attorney’s Office remains committed to prosecuting this case diligently and ensuring that Turner is held accountable.”
