Travis County DA’s Office Joins Prosecutors, Local Government Officials, & Municipalities in Lawsuit Against the Trump Administration’s Unlawful Termination of Community Violence Intervention and Victim Services Grants
Travis County, TX — On Friday, June 6, 2025, the Travis County District Attorney’s Office joined prosecutors, local government officials, and local governments in the lawsuit against the Trump administration’s abrupt and unlawful termination of federal public safety grants, through an amicus brief filed by the Public Rights Project.
In April 2025, the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) within the Department of Justice terminated grants that funded crucial public safety programs. These programs offered a comprehensive range of essential services, including victim assistance, community violence prevention programs, and support for law enforcement and prosecution efforts.
In May 2025, a coalition of five nonprofit and community organizations filed a class-action lawsuit in response to the OJP’s arbitrary cuts of $820 million in public safety grants.
The filed amicus brief supports their class-action lawsuit and states that the Trump administration’s abrupt decision to terminate the public safety grants violates the U.S. Constitution, breaches the Administrative Procedure Act (APA), and oversteps congressional powers through unilateral executive action. Since these actions violate the law, the plaintiffs are asking the Court to intervene and prevent the OJP from unlawfully cutting these grants, which save lives and keep our communities safe.
“Critical services that prevent and reduce violence, protect lives, and support victims and law enforcement in our communities have been suspended due to the Office of Justice Programs’ arbitrary and unlawful funding cuts, which are causing immediate harm to our community,” stated Travis County District Attorney José Garza. “We hope the courts will take action to help keep our communities safe. While these changes are in progress, we remain fully committed to ensuring community safety.”
