For Mr. Naz’s trial, jury selection started on Monday, September 15, 2025, and testimony began the following day. On Friday, September 19, 2025, the jury deliberated and found Mr. Naz guilty of Murder that same day. During the trial’s punishment phase, the jury found sufficient evidence of sudden passion, and on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, sentenced him to serve five years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
On January 22, 2023, the Austin Police Department arrested Mr. Naz and charged him with Murder in the death of Marquis Lavar Demps, 42, on January 21, 2023.

Surveillance footage from the gas station showed that the altercation occurred inside the store prior to the shooting. After the altercation, Mr. Demps tried to leave but was pursued by Mr. Naz and another store employee into the parking lot. Mr. Naz is then seen on video firing multiple rounds into Mr. Demp’s vehicle through his door and window while he was sitting in his vehicle with the door closed.
On July 16, 2025, Mr. Naz was subsequently re-indicted for the offense of Murder in preparation for the trial.
Assistant District Attorneys Jean Sullivan and Cahal McColgan presented the case against Mr. Naz with the support of Victim Counselor Terrience Greene, Investigator Jesse Hernandez, Administrative Investigator Cecilee Walker, Paralegal Allison Matous, and Legal Secretary Ana-Laura Mujica. Austin Police Department’s Detective Jason Ayers investigated Mr. Naz’s case.
