ICYMI: Travis County DA José Garza Meets with Coalition of Prosecutors to Demand Congressional Action to Protect Our Communities
Travis County, TX — Earlier this month, Travis County District Attorney José Garza convened with the founding members of the Fight Against Federal Overreach in Washington, D.C., to finalize their demands for Congress to safeguard justice, protect our communities, and ensure that federal officers who violate state laws are held accountable. The coalition of prosecutors was formed in response to growing concerns about warrantless entries, unlawful detentions, and coercive enforcement tactics by federal agents.
As Congress negotiates a deal on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spending, the coalition of prosecutors demands that additional measures be approved to protect our communities’ safety and rights, as well as our democratic institutions.
The demands for Congress include:
-
-
- No masks for federal officers
-
- Protect sensitive locations
-
- Stop racial profiling
-
- Uphold use-of-force standards
-
- Ensure state and local coordination and oversight
-
- Build safeguards into the system
-
- Require judicial warrants for arrest and home entry
-
- Eliminate arrest quotas
-
- Eliminate surges
-
- Cease the surveillance state
-
- Close the civil rights loophole
- Change leadership
-
“Our coalition strongly advocates that Congress approve additional measures to safeguard the rights and safety of our communities, as well as the integrity of our democratic institutions, “said Travis County District Attorney José Garza. “It is important to reiterate that federal law enforcement officers are not immune from state prosecution. Federal officials who commit unlawful acts in this county will be prosecuted and held accountable by this community.”
