Travis County District Attorney José Garza Releases 2022 Year-In-Review Letter
TRAVIS COUNTY, TX – Today, Travis County District Attorney José Garza released the 2022 Year-In-Review letter summarizing our office’s work to prioritize community safety and build a criminal justice system that is more accountable and equal for everyone.
Last year, when jury trials restarted in March, our office prioritized trials in cases of violence to hold people accountable who commit acts of violence. Another highlight included how our office implemented policies and invested in resources to meet the needs of victims and survivors of crime.
In addition, with the support of our county leaders, federal and local public safety agencies, and community-based partners, we continued to build a comprehensive strategy to address, reduce and prevent gun violence in Travis County. Finally, we pursued evidence-based strategies that increased stability in our communities and took a stand to protect the rights of our most vulnerable communities.
“In 2022, we continued to implement evidence-based strategies to support a safer Travis County for all communities,” said Travis County District Attorney José Garza.
“We focused our efforts on holding people accountable who commit acts of violence, meeting the needs of victims of crime and their families to find effective ways to help them heal, and working to prevent and reduce gun violence; that is how we make our community more safe.”
Our city experienced a downward trend in homicides last year. Still, our office will continue to work with the Office of Violence Prevention, the Austin Police Department, and our county leaders to reduce and prevent gun violence in our community.
In 2023, we look forward to continuing to bring justice to victims of crime and help them and their families heal. We are grateful for our team’s hard work and dedication to serving our community.
