Travis County District Attorney José Garza Releases Statement After Carmen Mejia’s Release
Today, Travis County District Attorney José Garza issued a statement after the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Carmen Mejia will not be deported following her release from jail.
“Last night, Ms. Carmen Mejia was released from the Travis County jail after the Department of Homeland Security issued a statement that Ms. Mejia would not be detained for deportation proceedings. Ms. Mejia’s release is an example of the power that regular people have when they fight against injustice.
We wish Ms. Mejia and her family the best in her new chapter. We will never be able to give her back the lost years, but we are grateful to the Innocence Project, our Conviction Integrity Unit, Mr. Art Guerrero, Congressman Greg Casar, and all who contributed to making sure our office could fulfill its promise to seek justice and right this wrong.”
