Travis County DA’s Office Provides Summary of Cases Tried the Week of October 9, 2023, to October 13, 2023
Travis County, TX — During the week of October 9, 2023, the Travis County District Attorney’s Office tried three cases before Travis County juries. Two of those trials resulted in convictions, and one resulted in an acquittal.
On Friday, October 13, 2023, a Travis County jury convicted Ruben Alonzo, 29, of Sexual Assault.
For Mr. Alonzo’s trial, jury selection started on Monday, October 9, 2023, and testimony began on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. On Friday, October 13, 2023, the jury deliberated and found Mr. Alonzo guilty of five counts of Sexual Assault. Mr. Alonzo will receive his sentence from a judge on November 9, 2023.
On August 12, 2021, the Austin Police Department arrested Mr. Alonzo and charged him with the offense of Sexual Assault for incidents that took place between June 2019 and July 2019.
On September 9, 2022, Mr. Alonzo was indicted on five counts of Sexual Assault.
In a separate case, on Thursday, October 12, 2023, a Travis County jury convicted Rian Hoover, 46, of Stalking.
For Mr. Hoover’s trial, jury selection started on Monday, October 9, 2023, and testimony began on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. On Thursday, October 12, 2023, the jury deliberated and found Mr. Hoover guilty of Stalking. A judge will sentence Mr. Hoover on November 9, 2023.
On June 28, 2021, the Austin Police Department arrested Mr. Hoover and charged him with the offense of Stalking for the offenses that took place between February 14, 2020, and June 17, 2021.
On April 5, 2022, Mr. Hoover was indicted for the offense of Stalking.
“Our office takes acts of violence seriously and is committed to holding people who commit violent crimes accountable,” said Travis County District Attorney José Garza. “We hope these outcomes bring closure and peace to the victims and their families.”
In another case, on Thursday, October 12, 2023, a Travis County jury acquitted Jesus Carmona-Flores, 34, of Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child.
For Mr. Carmona-Flores’s trial, jury selection started on Monday, October 9, 2023, and testimony began on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. On Thursday, October 12, 2023, the jury deliberated and found Mr. Carmona-Flores not guilty of Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child.
On September 29, 2021, the Austin Police Department arrested Mr. Carmona-Flores and charged him with Indecency with Child by Sexual Contact for the offense that allegedly took place in November 2017.
On April 5, 2022, Mr. Carmona-Flores was reindicted on Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child.
