Travis County Grand Jury Clears Officers Carruth, De La Rue, and Olejar in Use of Force Case
Travis County, TX —– Today, Travis County District Attorney José Garza announced that on Thursday, January 11, 2024, a Travis County Special Grand Jury concluded its review of the November 11, 2023, use of force case involving Austin Police Department SWAT Officer Jared Carruth #7291, SWAT Officer Kevin Olejar # 7788, and SWAT Sergeant Kevin De La Rue # 5907, and did not return an indictment for the officers.
On November 11, 2023, Ahmed Mohamed Nassar fired his gun at officers during a SWAT standoff and fatally shot Austin Police Department Senior Officer Jorge Pastore and injured another officer.
Austin Police Department SWAT Officers Carruth and Olejar and SWAT Sgt. De La Rue discharged their firearms, and Mr. Nassar sustained multiple gunshot wounds, succumbed to his injuries, and was pronounced deceased on the scene.
“Austin Police Department Senior Officer Pastore, SWAT Officers Carruth and Olejar, SWAT Sgt. De La Rue, and the injured officer should be commended for their acts of bravery and courage,” said Travis County District Attorney José Garza. “They put their own safety and lives at risk, and our office is truly grateful for their service.”
